How to use it
- Enter your regular hourly rate and the total hours you worked this week.
- Change the overtime threshold or multiplier if your job uses different rules.
- If some hours were paid at double time, enter them separately.
The formula
Overtime rate = hourly rate × 1.5
Overtime pay = overtime hours × overtime rate
Total = 40 × rate + overtime pay (+ double-time hours × rate × 2)
Example: $22/hour and 47 hours: 40 × $22 = $880, plus 7 × $33 = $231, total $1,111. Your effective rate for the week is $23.64/hour.

Good to know
- Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees earn at least 1.5 times their regular rate for every hour over 40 in a workweek. A workweek is any fixed 7-day period your employer sets; it doesn't have to start on Monday.
- Your "regular rate" includes shift differentials and most non-discretionary bonuses, which raises the overtime rate. See the shift differential calculator.
- Salaried employees can still be owed overtime if they earn under the federal salary threshold or don't meet a duties test.
- Starting with 2025 taxes, part of overtime pay can be deducted from federal income. See the no tax on overtime calculator.
Questions
How do I calculate time and a half?
Multiply your hourly rate by 1.5. At $18/hour, time and a half is $27/hour; 5 hours of overtime pays $135.
What is double time?
Twice your regular rate. Federal law doesn't require it, but California requires double time after 12 hours in a day, and many union contracts pay it on holidays.
Who is exempt from overtime?
Mainly salaried executive, administrative and professional employees who meet duties tests and a minimum salary, plus some specific jobs like outside sales. Most hourly workers are non-exempt and must get overtime.
Do paid holidays and PTO count toward 40 hours?
Not under federal law. Only hours actually worked count toward the 40-hour overtime threshold, unless your employer's policy or contract says otherwise.
