How to use it
- Pick a mode: between two times, between two dates, or add/subtract time.
- Enter the start and end (or the start and the amount of time to add).
- Read the duration in hours:minutes, decimal hours and minutes.
The formula
Duration = end − start; if the end time is earlier, the span crosses midnight and 24 hours are added
Between dates: (end date-time − start date-time), shown as days, hours and minutes
Decimal hours = total minutes ÷ 60
Example: From 10:45 PM to 7:15 AM is 8 hours 30 minutes (8.5 hours, 510 minutes). From Monday 9:00 to Wednesday 17:30 is 2 days 8 hours 30 minutes, or 56.5 hours.
Good to know
- Times between dates use your device's clock, so they account for a daylight saving change inside the range.
- For shift work, the time card calculators subtract breaks and add up a whole week.
- To add up several durations (e.g. 2:45 + 3:30 + 1:50), use the hours and minutes calculator.
Questions
How do I calculate the time between two times?
Convert both to minutes after midnight, subtract, and convert back. 9:40 AM is 580 minutes and 2:15 PM is 855 minutes; the difference is 275 minutes, or 4 hours 35 minutes. If the result is negative, add 1,440 minutes (24 hours).
How many hours are between 7 AM and 3 PM?
8 hours. Between 7 AM and 7 PM is 12 hours, and between 3 PM and 11 PM is 8 hours.
How do I calculate time across midnight?
Add 24 hours to the end time before subtracting. 11:00 PM to 6:00 AM is (6 + 24) − 23 = 7 hours.
What time will it be in 8 hours?
Use the add/subtract mode: enter the start time and 8 hours. From 10:30 PM, 8 hours later is 6:30 AM the next day.
